Laughing Gravy - 1931 (original 2 reel version)- Wonderful to see so many of the MGM fanfares reinstated to the shorts as is the case here with original titles all round in fine print. The last time this film was released on video it was the 3 reel version which omitted the quarantine ending. I'm glad to say that this is the original version with the correct ending. I'm not saying that I don't appreciate new footage and expanded versions but I would view them merely as a supplement to the original versions, after all the footage was cut out for a reason but its fine to view them in tandem with longer versions as is the case on this disc.
Laughing Gravy - 1931 (3 reel version)- Curiously this omits the MGM fanfare and it also omits the quarantine ending as the 3rd reel has an alternative ending itself.

This reel was discovered in the mid 1980's by leading L&H film restoration expert Michael Agee. Michael was responsible for restoring most of the sound L&H films during this period. He has gone on since then to produce the definitive restoration of the silent L&H films currently available on DVD in the US - The Lost Films Of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. It's a pity the chapter doesn't start on the 3rd reel. Sound is a little rough on this reel. Originally there was no music score on this reel but this one has a score. The odd thing is that the music sounds original, it has that slightly aged sound rather than the stereo effect of the Beau Hunks Orchestra. This suggests that original background tracks were added. The result is quite delightful. This is probably how Laughing Gravy was first previewed. Afterwards the last reel was cut out and the quarantine ending was added. There is also an alternative colourised version of this film which has both the 3rd reel and the quarantine ending. The music in the 3rd reel of this version differs from the B&W version being from Ronnie Hazelhurst.

Les Carottiers - 1931 (French version of Be Big & Laughing Gravy)- MGM fanfare plus original titles in a rare release of a nice print. If you watch closely you can watch Babe reading his French cue cards 11 minutes into playing time!

The Fixer-Uppers - 1935- Original titles all round in a lovely crisp print. There is also an alternative colourised version of this film.

Slipping Wives - 1927- The titles appear original but sometimes what appears original has been replaced by new titles artificially aged with added dirt and scratches! The intertitles themselves look flawless (they look original) the rest of the print has several scratches but overall is a very well restored film. The end title is a replacement.
